Liquid Labour & the Evolving Workforce

Liquid labour refers to the shift from the traditional workplace structure to one undefined by time and space. Due to the prominence of gadgets and platforms which facilitate this constant connectivity, along with employer demand for increased flexibility of workers, the result of this evolving environment is the blurring of lines between individuals' personal and work lives, with employees feeling increasingly pressured to be accessible 24/7. From smartphones to personal computers, to social media and the Cloud, these technologies allow individuals to be reached wherever, whenever.

Pitch Perfect: An Introduction to my Digital Artefact 2.0

For the BCM 206 digital artefact, I've decided to establish my own music blog titled Listen Loud, a project I eagerly commenced a month prior in anticipation for this very assessment. Music has always been a massive part of my life, and I've always wanted to work in the industry in one way or another, and so this is also my attempt to kickstart my career while building valuable, practical experience.

The Beginning of Telecommunications: What About the Soup?

During the Frankel Prussian War of 1870, the mother of a frontline soldier approached the telegraph office to send a message to her son, wishing him to be safe and to eat his soup, before presenting to the telegrapher a jar of the broth to send alongside the message. While the message was able to be sent to the woman's son, the jar of soup remained, with the woman struggling to understand how her physical message was able to be transmitted, yet not the physical jar of soup –– "What about the soup?".

Sixty Seconds of Digital Data

Big data refers to "extremely large data sets that may be analysed computationally to reveal patterns, trends, and associations, especially relating to human behaviour and interactions". In the last two years, "more data was generated [...] than in the entire human history" prior, and since 2012, big data has created over 14 million jobs globally. With this quantity of information, it's no surprise that 99.5% of data remains untouched, and of that 0.05% that is collected, less than half is actually used in decision making.

Content Creation, Control & Copyright: Protecting Intellectual Property

As I'm sure many others born in the late nineties can relate to, some of my fondest childhood memories involve trips to the local video store to rent the newest movies on DVD. Likewise, I'm sure you're all equally familiar with the anti-piracy ad that played before each and every one. Piracy: we know it's a crime, but why? How is downloading a movie from the internet comparable to stealing a car, or a handbag, or a television?

The #BCM112 DA: I Should Have Kept it Simple, Stupid

When I first decided I wanted to use the PASS at UOW Facebook group for my digital artefact, the problem I was attempting to address was the relative lack of participation in PASS compared to the number of students enrolled in each participating subject. By creating an informal, student-led space which encourages active participation from and between students, I hoped this would encourage others to attend also. What I hadn't anticipated, however, was a sudden and university-wide transition to remote learning, which had a massive impact on my digital artefact in a number of ways.
