Big data refers to "extremely large data sets that may be analysed computationally to reveal patterns, trends, and associations, especially relating to human behaviour and interactions". In the last two years, "more data was generated [...] than in the entire human history" prior, and since 2012, big data has created over 14 million jobs globally. With this quantity of information, it's no surprise that 99.5% of data remains untouched, and of that 0.05% that is collected, less than half is actually used in decision making.
Every program you use is built from a string of instructions known as source code, which tell the software how to function. Referred to as a "technical blueprint", there are two distinct forms programmers need to be aware of when designing a program: open source software, and closed source software.
As I'm sure many others born in the late nineties can relate to, some of my fondest childhood memories involve trips to the local video store to rent the newest movies on DVD. Likewise, I'm sure you're all equally familiar with the anti-piracy ad that played before each and every one. Piracy: we know it's a crime, but why? How is downloading a movie from the internet comparable to stealing a car, or a handbag, or a television?
In order to understand the concept of hyperreality, one must first understand the concept of reality—what it means for something to be real. Reality is defined as "the state of things as they actually exist, as opposed to an idealistic or notional idea of them". But, how does something become real?
When I first decided I wanted to use the PASS at UOW Facebook group for my digital artefact, the problem I was attempting to address was the relative lack of participation in PASS compared to the number of students enrolled in each participating subject. By creating an informal, student-led space which encourages active participation from and between students, I hoped this would encourage others to attend also. What I hadn't anticipated, however, was a sudden and university-wide transition to remote learning, which had a massive impact on my digital artefact in a number of ways.
